The Association

Once upon a time

The article referenced below can be read in Pellingeboken 2, where Gunvor Ekholm details the association’s first decades.

During the summer of 1936, the possibility of founding a local heritage association was discussed. In Helsinki, the association was intended to serve as a link between relocated Pellinge residents and Pellinge summer guests. Later that autumn, Heinrich Schlücking, Gustaf Gustafsson, and Walter Sundbäck met with their wives and Oskar Ferlmann. The result was published in Hufvudstadsbladet on October 25: “Persons interested in forming a Pellinge Local Heritage Association are invited to a social gathering on Wednesday the 28th at 8 p.m. The program features Birgit Hästesko and composer Ole Edgren. Engineer G. Huss will speak about lighthouse lighting.”

The inaugural meeting was held on January 31, 1937. Heinrich Schlücking was elected as the association’s first chairman. Today, members are divided into permanent members, members who pay an annual fee, and honorary members. The number of permanent members is approximately 150, and those paying annual fees number around 250.

As early as 1939, an excursion was organized, that time to Edisudden. Motorboat races were held for “boats equipped with 3.5 hp Penta engines.” The tradition of excursions and motorboat races continued until the late 1970s.

The Purpose of the Association

In the statutes, the founders were forward-thinking enough to see, nearly 80 years ago, how the archipelago was changing and emphasized the importance of preserving memories and materials regarding how the archipelago community functioned in the past. The same foresight applies to the idea of bringing together all those who have a living interest in the archipelago and local history.

However, the association cannot live only by looking in the rearview mirror. A very important goal is to help keep our beloved archipelago alive within a functioning village community. As part of this, the association wishes to promote the opportunities for permanent residents to continue living on Pellinge and earn their livelihood locally. This applies especially to ensuring that young people can remain and start families on Pellinge.

Something for everbody

Pellinge Hembygdsförening has long traditions and committed members. We are happy to do things together and still have that ”let’s help each other” spirit. We are especially active during the summer months. Here are some examples:

• a stand at the Pellinge summer market (flags, books, maps and postcards etc. for sale)
• coordination and marketing of events together with other local associations and entrepreneurs
• Midsummer day party at the museum Hörbergsgården
• children’s party at the museum in July
• coffee parties, exhibitions etc. at the museum
• maintenance and administration of Klovharun
• open house week and guided tours on Klovharun
• regular maintenance work at the museum and Klovharun
• member magazine Pellinge Nytt in Swedish
